Is amazing how memory works! I have been asked many times by my students what has been the most scary moment in my filming life and I always tell the same story. In Russia filming bears! The story is very vivid in my head but so much that I started to doubt myself and decided to go through the footage to find that moment that I talk about and see if it really was that way. Even when it doesn't look that scary, I can still say that that was the most scary moment in my life. For 2 seconds I thought I was gonna die haha. (no joke)

The story goes like this. We were in the middle of nowhere north of Sakhalin, Russia (an island north of Japan). We felt pretty safe because we were in a house surrounded by a river that would go die in the sea in front of us. We were with an ecologist and his team trying to get Lena, a mama bear with her two cubs. He wanted to change the GPS he put on her neck the previous year so he could track back her journey. I'll never forget her name. She was super smart and FYI, we never got her.

One day I asked Ivan, the ecologist, if it was safe for me to go film on the beach. I wanted to take shots of the house from that angle. He took his super archaic antenna while he was half napping in a boat and after a couple of beeps from the antenna he said - Yes, Lena is not nearby -

So I headed my way with another man to the beach. Pretty nervous but very excited. There were a lot of seals swimming in the shore so that would be great to film too.

After a while filming the house, seals, etc. The old man with me taps on my shoulder and tells me - Look! - and points to the right. And I see Lena and her two babies!! OMG!! there were soo close to us, probably 15 meters (50 feet). As everybody probably knows, a mama bear doesn't care if she dies to protect her babies, so I thought we were in big trouble. I look further to the right (the visibility was really really bad!!) and I see Ivan with his shot gun coming towards Lena, that's why she looks very alarmed and distressed. Anyways, in my memory and how I saw it right there, Lena turns to her right and starts running towards us. I closed my eyes and started saying she is coming she is coming!! When I looked up she was gone into the fog...

They taught me many things about how to act if a bear came to me. I had a fire thing on my pocket and something else that made a loud noise to scare them, but the only thing I could think of was that I could probably run faster than the old man that was with me haha.

ESPAÑOL!!

Es increíble como nos funciona la memoria! Mis alumnos me han preguntado un montón de veces, cuál ha sido el momento en el que he pasado más miedo durante alguna filmación y siempre cuento la misma historia. Grabando osos en Rusia! La historia sigue tan viva en mi cabeza que empecé a dudar de mi misma y decidí buscar el material bruto para encontrar el momento que siempre cuento para ver si realmente pasó como lo recuerdo. Incluso cuando no se ve tan peligroso en el vídeo, todavía sigo diciendo que fue el momento en el que mas miedo he pasado en mi vida. Por 2 segundos pensé que me iba a morir jaja (fuera de broma)

La historia va así. Estábamos en el medio de la nada al norte de Sakhalin, Rusia (es una isla al norte de Japón). Nos sentíamos bastante seguros porque estábamos en una casa rodeada por un río que iba a morir a la playa justo en frente nuestro. Estábamos con un ecologista y su equipo para poder pillar a Lena, una mamá oso con sus dos crías. El ecologista quería cambiar el GPS que le había puesto el año anterior para seguir sus pasos para ver todo su recorrido. Lena era super inteligente. Para vuestra información, nunca la pillamos.

Un día le pregunté a Ivan, el ecologista, que si era seguro ir a la playa. Quería grabar unos planos de la casa desde ese ángulo. Ivan cogió su antena super arcaica mientras echaba una siesta en un bote y después de un par de bips me dijo - si, Lena no esta cerca -

Así que me fui a la playa con otro hombre. Súper nerviosa pero a la vez con ganas. Había un montón de focas nadando en la orilla así que podría pillar planos guapos de eso también.

Después de estar grabando durante un rato la casa, las focas, etc. El hombre mayor que estaba conmigo me toca en el hombro y me dice - Mira! - y apunta hacia la derecha. Miro y veo a Lena con sus crías super cerca!! como a 15 metros. Como todo el mundo probablemente sabe, a una Osa no le importa perder la vida protegiendo a sus crías así que pensé que nos habíamos metido en un gran problema. Miro un poco mas a la derecha (la visibilidad era super mala) y veo a Ivan yendo hacia Lena con la escopeta, por eso se la ve tan alarmada y estresada. Bueno, en mi memoria y como lo viví en ese momento, Lena se da la vuelta y empieza a correr hacia nosotros. Cerré los ojos y empecé a decir - que vienen que vienen!!- Cuando volví a mirar, habían desaparecido en la niebla...

Estando allí me enseñaron como actuar si me encontraba con un oso. Tenía una bengala en mi bolsillo y otra cosa que hacia un ruido muy grande para asustarlos, pero lo único que podía pensar en ese momento era que probablemente yo corría mas rápido que el viejito que estaba conmigo jaja.
